baby elephant

Sam usually wants to ride on a horse, but maybe she was waxing nostalgic today ‘coz she chose the elephant instead. The elephant was her favorite when she was younger, after upgrading from her beloved swan. Posted by Hello

I took Sam to her favorite mall after school. Here she is on the carousel, reaching out to touch one of the horsies. Posted by Hello

stars for sammy

Sam got two stars in school today — one for being the first to correctly identify the color red and another for being the first to finish coloring this page in their workbook. Not a bad artistic effort from a girl who’s 3 1/2 years old. I joked that she should get SpongeBob’s good noodle stars. Posted by Hello

Mommy, could you tell Daddy to stop fussing over me and taking my pic? This is school, you know. Posted by Hello

My wife Ellen was also excited over Sam’s first day of school… though not nearly as irrationally agitated as I was. Yes, I’m paranoid. Posted by Hello

going to school

It was Sam’s first day of school yesterday.

She was so excited — actually, she wanted to go to school as early as last year, and for the past few months she’s been looking forward to finally getting her wish.

It’s funny — I always thought Marlin in “Finding Nemo” was overprotective in wanting to delay the day Nemo would finally go to school. But I was more tense than Sam was over her first day, and even more paranoid than my wife Ellen. We made sure that we would both accompany Sam on her first day of school.

Time sure flies. Sometimes I wish Sam wouldn’t be in a hurry to grow up. Around the time she turned two, she would always say, “When I’m bigger, I’m going to…” do this and that.

I know that’s part of the process of growing up. I know she’s excited to become a big girl and do many different things, to show that she’s now independent. It’s selfish, I know, to sometimes wish that Sam would remain a baby forever, but sometimes I feel that way just the same.

Good thing Ellen is here to always put things in perspective. It’s the start of another exciting adventure for Sam, for us — another stage in the life of our family. And I’m really proud of Sam. No fuss, no clinging, no fear. She was eager to go to school, make new friends and learn new things. And while I had to leave after about 15 minutes for a conference call, Ellen told me that when each student was called on stage, Sam confidently introduced herself in a loud, clear voice.

That’s Sam. That’s my wonderful daughter. She’s all grown up and I’m so proud of her. Just forgive me Sam if part of me will always see you as Daddy’s little girl.

I promise to learn to let go and watch you soar. Posted by Hello rss
